COVID-19 research

There are a number of clinical research trials investigating potential treatments for COVID-19. We’ve put together information on some of these trials so that you can take a look to see if you are eligable. Join the fight against coronavirus:

We are taking part in the national PRINCIPLE clinical trial. The trial aims to find low-risk medicines that can help people with COVID-19 symptoms get better quickly and stop them needing to go to hospital.

To take part, you need to be:

  1. Experiencing symptoms that are likely to be caused by a COVID-19 infection, for fewer than 15 days:

A new continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

and/or a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to take your temperature).

  1. You also need to be aged 50 to 64, with at least one of the following conditions:

weakened immune system due to a serious illness or medication (e.g. chemotherapy),

heart disease or high blood pressure,

asthma or lung disease,

diabetes not treated with insulin,

liver disease,

stroke or neurological problem,

OR you can take part if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and are aged 65 and over

Participation is entirely voluntary. Once you have read more information, if you are interested in taking part, we ask you to complete a short online form to see if you are eligible.

You can also join the trial online, even if you are not currently registered with our practice. For full details, visit:

Do you have a continuous new or worsening cough, a high temperature AND did you start to feel unwell in the last 4 days? If you are aged 60 and above? OR aged 50 and above with any of these illnesses:

high blood pressure or heart disease,

COPD or lung disease,

currently taking 20mg or more of Prednisolone,

then you could be eligible to join the Agile trial which aims to find a treatment for people with COVID-19.

If you have recovered from COVID-19 please consider supporting the COVID-19 plasma collection programme.

The antibody rich plasma of people who have recovered from COVID-19 can be transfused into people who are struggling to develop their own immune response. This could be lifesaving.
